Thanks to everyone for their help on this trivial problem. The correct
solution, of course, is to add a global statement inside the body of the
function. It makes sense now that I hear it (well, read it) but I'm going
to have to go back and read the documentation because that's really not
the picture I got of how to use the global statement.

Anyways, it was in fact a simple problem. Thanks again to everyone!
