self-documenting Python?

I'm a big fan of doc strings (ala Emacs lisp) and was wondering if
anyone ever considered adding this feature to Python. The ability
to attach documentation to function and variables is good because
it encourages coders to do so and (obviously) makes the code easier
to use (and hack on). This is one of my few gripes with the Python
language.
