On the subject of ignoring the object-orientedness in the tutorial:
I don't think this is a good idea. Even a short note about the
reference/value issues (and probably a line saying that the details will
be expained lateron) somewhere early in the manual would have saved
me quite a bit of grief in my first experiences with python.
