system and open

Ok, a couple of questions. Where is write and related functions located?
They aren't in built-in with open. I cannot find close either. I want to
write the output of something to a file but cannot figure out where these
commands are located. They are only mentioned breifly in the docs I have which
I am assuming are the current ones. Also, is there any way to get the output
of a system command assigned to a variable? e.g. list = system('ls'). I want
to do something like this also but don't know if I would be able to. Any ideas
are appreciated. Thanks...
