Why not use an older outdated computer and run Linux or FreeBSD native
on
it?

Yes, but where is the problem? HylaFAX works very well together
with linux , windows and other operating systems. HylaFAX doesn't
require much ressources, so you can recycle an older computer
as HylaFAX server.
