Dumb question: Did you call faxgetty with the serial port? (since I run 
hylafax on a solaris this would look something like 
"/usr/local/sbin/faxgetty ttyb")

For client access you need to edit the hosts.hfaxd in your $HYLAFAX/etc 
directory (did you?).
