Almost any hardware modem will do.  Get one that supports both Class 1 and 
Class 2 and 2D in Class2.  That won't likely be printed on the box, 
though, so just look for Class 1 and Class 2.

Unless you're going to format the TIFF into the correct format (TIFF/F, 
monochrome, etc) you'll be better off with Postscript to avoid tiff2ps.
